Our repertoire is Carissimi's oratorio Jonah, the story of Jonah and the Whale. Gulp! The entire piece is only about twenty minutes long.
Getting scores and parts: we'll be using my own edition of the piece, with my own markings.
For those of you who are current OSU students, I will leave your scores for you on the table outside the score library, Timashev Hall room 252. I'll email you when they're available!
For other folks, please send me your mailing address: I will mail your score to you.
Why no .PDF? Because I'm hoping to publish this edition, there are atypical rules about copying and transmitting it. Do not scan or take photos of your score.
What part do I perform!? I'll send you all the choral and orchestral divisions, and the preliminary solo assignments, this coming week. Sean, Michael, and Aidan: more soon.
Dates and times
Rehearsals are Sunday 5:00–7:00 PM in January and February: singers attend January 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, and February 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th, while instrumentalists attend only February 19th and 26th.
Rehearsals are on Ohio State's campus, in Timashev Hall, room 160 — the big glassed-in "fishbowl" rehearsal room on the first floor. The only exception is the rehearsal on Jan. 15th, which is upstairs in Timashev room 300.
Timashev Hall is at 1900 College Road, Columbus, OH 43210, and parking is available in the garage just to the south (just north of the Student Union).
If coming from the north: take I-71 south to I-270 west, then in a couple of minutes, State Route 315 south. Take SR 315 to exit 3: Kinnear Road, King Ave., 5th Street. At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left on Kinnear, then an immediate left again, under the highway, on Olentangy River Road, heading north. Five seconds later, after the highway bridge, turn right (east) on John Herrick Drive and cross the river. Continue as below.
If coming from the south: take I-71 north to State Route 315 north; get off at Exit 3. At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left (north) on Cannon Drive, paralleling the park and river on your left; turn right on John Herrick Drive. Continue as below.
Take John Herrick Drive east several blocks until you dead-end into Neil Ave. Turn right (south) and an immediate left (east again) on W. 12th Avenue; then, after about a minute, turn left (north) on College Rd. The Union and parking garages are on your right.
The performance is Monday, February 27th, in Timashev 160, our rehearsal room. Call time is 7:15 PM, curtain is 8:00, and we should be finished by 9:30.
The performance
The Rhetoric Workshop is my D.M.A. lecture recital! Alongside my short lecture, we'll demonstrate some of our rehearsal techniques for the audience, so they, too, can see how we learn to make musical drama up close.
Concert dress for everyone is concert black, bedecked with one showy item in solid color. This could be a solid blue tie, a solid red armband (anybody else perform Les Misérables back in high school?), a solid golden cape, or dyeing your hair solid purple — anything authentically you.
We will perform on-book.
Singers will need a black three-ring binder without a clear "view" slot on the cover.
Over the break
Singers: My advisor, Dr. Bode, has stressed that we need to have our choral material prepared for the first rehearsal on Jan. 8th. Before then, please learn your pitches and rhythms on nos. 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, and 21. Mercifully, most of those movements are only about eight bars long!
Continuo team: I'll contact y'all. We have some advance planning to do. You have the best job of anybody in this production.
